Community Health Resources: Heart Disease
a guide to national and local resources
for Madison County, Alabama, residents
According to the American Heart Association, cardiovascular diseases and stroke are the No. 1 cause of death in Alabama. The Centers for Disease Control reports between 2,000 and 3,000 adults over age 35 die in Madison County annually due to heart disease.
“Studies show people are healthier if they are knowledgeable about their medical conditions, treatments and prescriptions,” notes Rosalind Lett, Associate Director of Main Library Public Services for Huntsville-Madison County Public Library.
Ms Lett is a longtime advocate for “health literacy,” and she was recognized in 2011 by Library Journal as a “Mover and Shaker” for her efforts. “The public library is a natural partner for the medical community. Doctors diagnose, treat, and prescribe; then librarians provide books, online information, and referrals to community resources so patients may educate themselves.”
Huntsville-Madison County Public Library received a 2012 grant from the National Library of Medicine to promote health literacy. The project, “Consumer Health 4 Life,” includes the creation of e-books on specific health topics for consumer research.
“The quantity of online information can be overwhelming for patients,” observes Mary Wallace Moore, Reference and Adult Services Manager. “People aren’t sure which websites to trust. So, my department created online research guides to medical information with links to community resources.”
“We hope that these guides will be used by students, patients, doctors and nurses to connect patients to the national and local resources available to them.”
